As Americans we are used to having access to plenty of water. However, there are many locations around the world that have minimum access causing people to walk miles for drinking water. It is important to conserve water since it is such a precious and much needed resource. Simply put, humanity can’t survive without water. Do your part as a homeowner and take steps to conserve water. The following tips will help you get started.
- Monitor Your Water Bill – One of the most convenient ways to keep track of water is to monitor your bill. If you notice large spikes in between bills, there is a problem. Just a small leak can cause you to waste more than 10,000 gallons of water per year. Have a professional inspect your home for leaks or other plumbing issues. Make repairs immediately.
- Use of Water Outdoors – Let’s face it, most counties around the United States experience a drought. One of the first mandatory requests on the list is to limit watering the lawn and plants. This of course leads to brown grass and dead plants. There is a way to get around this situation. Plant native plants to your area. For example, Miami has Palm Trees and other plants that are perfect for the hot weather. Plant trees and other plants native to your area to assure they will thrive, even during a drought. The rain water alone can keep native plants alive.
- Rain Buckets – When the local news says it’s going to rain, set a few buckets out on your lawn to catch the water. This water is provided by mother nature and it will allow you to use it all at once in certain areas of your yard. For example, if you have a garden that requires more water than a rain storm could provide. You can use the buckets of rain water in isolated areas in your garden to assure you are meeting the water needs. Tip: Use the buckets of rain water immediately to prevent mosquitoes from hatching.
You can also do small things around the house to conserve water. Try turning the faucet off while you are brushing your teeth. Also make sure your washing machine is at the correct load level. Meaning if you have a small load of laundry, don’t set the machine at large. The extra water is wasteful. It will also save you money in the long run. Do your part to establish water conservation in your home today!
