Water costs money! As a homeowner, you have most likely discovered a few ways to save water in order to lower your bill. If you haven’t, you certainly want to begin making changes right away. Do you have a big family? Or, a teenager that likes to take showers for one hour daily? If you answered yes, chances are your household is using more water than necessary. There are a variety of ways to reduce water use in your home. Below are the top 5 ways to save water.
1 – Use Water When Necessary
Dentists recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day. This means that everyone in your home is using the water to complete this task daily. Are any of them letting the water run while they are scrubbing their teeth? This clean water is flowing directly down the drain without even being touched once. Ask family members to turn off the faucet while they are brushing their teeth and only use it to rinse.
2 – Choose Showers over Baths
If you and your family members are capable of taking short showers, you can actually use less than taking a bath. Short showers use less water than actually filling up the bath tub. If you have young children that prefer to take baths you can purchase smaller tubs made specifically for children that fit inside the standard tub. Fill the smaller tub with water until the child graduates to taking showers.
3 – Use the Dishwasher
Your mother probably told you to never use the dishwasher because it used too much water and electric. These days, dishwashers are energy efficient and only use the amount of water needed per cycle. This means that old fashioned dish washing in the sink actually uses more water compared to dishwashers. Invest in a good quality dishwasher machine to save water, money and time.
4 – Check for Leaks
A leaky faucet can cause more damage to your water bill then you think. If you hear drip, drip, drip coming from your faucets you are wasting water. If you are not sure how much water you are wasting, do a simple test to prove it. Place a large bowl under the leaky faucet for the entire night. When you wake up in the morning you will see how much wasted water accumulated overnight from a simple leak. You just paid for all of that water to go down the drain. Fix leaky faucets as soon as you discover the issue. Most leaky faucet issues can be solved with a quick trip to the hardware store and a DIY project.
5 – Recycle Rain Water
Do you have a beautiful yard or garden? How many times a week do you have to water it? You can save water by recycling rainwater in a bucket. Leave a bucket or two outdoors to collect rain water. Once the bucket is full immediately use it to water your plants and trees. Beware of standing water because mosquitoes can hatch quickly and cause health issues.
These 5 water saving tips are easy to do and will help you save water and money on a monthly basis. Put these tips to the test and begin making changes in your household today. If you suspect you have serious water leaks in your pipes or other areas of your home, contact a professional plumber to schedule an inspection.
